Introduction to Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF)

Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) is a web security vulnerability that allows an attacker to force a server-side application to make HTTP requests to arbitrary domains or internal resources that are not directly accessible from the outside. This vulnerability arises when an application fetches a remote resource without validating the user-supplied URL.

How SSRF Attacks Work

    • Launching attacks against internal systems: The attacker can use the server as a launchpad for attacks against other systems on the internal network.
    • Data exfiltration: The attacker can exfiltrate sensitive data from the server or internal network through the SSRF vulnerability.

Practical Example: Exploiting SSRF in an Image Fetching Service

Imagine a web application that allows users to provide a URL for an image, which the application then fetches and displays. If the application doesn’t validate the URL, an attacker could submit a URL like this:

This would cause the server to make a request to its own localhost on port 8080, potentially revealing an internal admin panel or sensitive information.

Detecting SSRF Vulnerabilities

  • Analyze Application Functionality: Identify functionalities that involve fetching remote resources based on user input.
  • Test with Suspicious URLs: Submit URLs pointing to internal resources, loopback addresses (e.g., 127.0.0.1), or private IP addresses to see if the application makes the requests.
  • Inspect Server Logs: Monitor server logs for unusual outgoing requests to internal or unexpected domains.
  • Use Vulnerability Scanners: Employ automated vulnerability scanners that can detect SSRF vulnerabilities.
